Dreaming of Death

Dreaming of Death

The most frightening dream most people experience is that of their own impending death, or the loss of a loved one. If there is one certainty in life it is death. You all know the day shall come that you transcend into another experience. That experience certainly has different meanings for different people, but the dreams of death are often symbolic of a situation ending in your life, or that there is a situation in your life that needs to end. Death in dreams often signals a rebirth is in sight and soon to be the next experience.

A lot of people fear change. Even good change brings a certain level of stress into your lives and will have you second guessing your decisions as well as the path you have chosen. Unexplainable fear runs deeper and may be held secret from the conscious due to the trauma experienced and the reluctance to call it back into memory. Yet the only way to heal of this is to experience the memory once again and see if there are details that closely match the details of your dream. For instance, a very ordinary item in your waking world may cause night terrors in your sleep. It is believed by the experts that study dreams, that these objects may have been present in a room in which you experienced an upset. One subject was terrified by a dream of a black purse choking her to death. Upon regression, she expressed the frightening experience of finding her grandmother dead in her recliner with fingers wrapped around her purse strap. The subject was 8 years old at the time and went for help. She was sheltered from the experience by her parents and was not properly debriefed on what she had found and that she had done the heroic thing by summoning help. Instead, she grew up feeling as though she did not do something right and, thus, her grandmother was leaving with her purse in hand. In working with her therapist, she was able to control the dream, change the purse to a designer bag she had always wanted, and throw it carefree over her shoulder and smile. The dream never returned.

To dream of the death of loved ones or friends, it often is interpreted as a relationship that needs to change. A young man or woman needing to break free of the parents will often dream of that parent’s death. An argument with a loved one may mark the change of the relationship and, in turn, bring on the dream of the relative’s death. Sometimes you simply outgrow the family member or friend and will begin to pull away. This, too, can show up as a death dream of another.

Dreaming of a dead body can express the lost chance or opportunity. The potential you have that goes undiscovered or unexpressed can also be represented by a dead body. The loss of gift or talent can be a grievous matter and one that self will express in dreams.

Whatever face death takes in your dreams, only rarely does it represent the literal death of someone.
