Amazing Facts about Dreams

There is so much about dreams that is not known that one may ask the question of what is it that we DO know? There are some definite facts out there about how and why and what we dream. Some are like, well yes, of course, facts, and others are like, wow! That was totally unimaginable! So check out what it is you thought you knew about dreams against what science has, thus far, been able to prove about them.

Upon waking, you are already beginning to lose the memory of the dream. After 5 minutes of being awake, 90% of the details are gone. If you are actively working with your dreams and recording or journaling immediately after the dream, you may retain more of the dream at actual wake up. However, for the average person, it is gone within minutes.

Some of your most famous monsters are from the dreams of writers. Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired by a dream to write Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Mary Shelley’s dream inspired her to create Frankenstein. Many famous inventors were avid dreamers and were, perhaps, the first dream journal keepers. Everyone dreams! Though there are people convinced that they do not dream, they do. Perhaps they are late beginners in the cycle of dreams and do not dream until they are deeper into the REM period of sleep where it is more difficult to remember dreams upon waking.

Men have different dreams from women. Men are more likely to dream of other men; maybe that’s why they don’t like to talk about dreams! Women dream equally of other men and women. Both sexes react in the same way to what is termed as “wet dreams” based on the physical sensation of sexual excitement being experienced in a dream.

You do not dream of strangers! Every face in your dream has been an actual person you have laid eyes on at some point in your life! Perhaps the little lady in the grocery store, or the guy pumping his gas as you drive by are fleeting moments, but are recorded for later recall. Perhaps it’s the action the person was demonstrating that has meaning in your dream, though they may be doing something else in the dream.

People who lost their eye sight after birth still dream as though they can see! Those that are blind at birth have very vivid dreams but they are based on sound, smell, touch and emotion. The majority of people dream in color while only 12% of the population surveyed dream in black and white. People who have smoked cigarettes and then stop will often find themselves smoking in a dream, and immediately react very strongly to it in the dream. They are horrified at what they see themselves doing. These dreams are reported to be much more vivid and recall easier. It is thought and the emotion behind the reaction that imprints deeper on the memory. So, go ahead and enjoy your nighttime adventures!
